Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program

Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides monthly rental subsidies to low-income working families, senior citizens and the disabled. The Grand Rapids Housing Commission (GRHC) administers the program in the Greater Grand Rapids area, helping households bridge the gap between what they can afford to spend on housing and the fair market rent of an apartment, townhouse or single-family home.

THE GRAND RAPIDS HOUSING COMMISSION IS NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW SECTION 8 APPLICATIONS. This is because the demand for housing assistance greatly exceeds our supply of Section 8 Housing Choice vouchers. Our Section 8 waiting list is closed indefinitely.

Households who applied to our Section 8 program in November 2010 can check the status of their application online at WaitListCheck.com. Applicants currently on the waiting list are being served in numerical order—we are now processing applications numbered through 975.

It is each applicant's responsibility to notify the GRHC of any change of address—applicants are informed by mail when their name reaches the top of the waiting list. Information can be updated online at WaitListCheck.com. To update an application by mail, please click Application Update Form to download the necessary paperwork.
