Frequently Asked Questions, GRHC Agency-Owned Housing
Does the GRHC have immediate vacancies at its housing developments?
No, there are waiting lists for all of our agency-owned properties. GRHC family developments—Campau Commons Apartments, Creston Plaza Apartments, Scattered Sites Program—have the longest wait times, with minimum waits of several years for non-Veteran households.
How do I get on the waiting list to rent at a GRHC property?
To be added to our waiting list, please complete and submit our online housing application form.
Can I be on more than one waiting list?
Yes, based on the information on your housing application, the GRHC will automatically offer you placement on each of the waiting lists for which your family qualifies.
Can I be on the waiting list for both the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental subsidy program and GRHC agency-owned housing developments?
Yes, if you are on our HCV waiting list, you can still apply to rent at our agency-owned developments. You can only be assisted through one subsidized program at a time, however; so if you are living at a GRHC development, your name reaches the top of the Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list and you are qualified to receive a voucher, you will have the option to move out of the GRHC development and transfer to the HCV Program.
I have moved since applying for housing. How do I update the information on my housing application?
You can update your information online via the GRHC Applicant Portal.
What exactly needs to be updated on my previously submitted housing application?
It’s important that you keep your current contact information on file with the GRHC. When your name reaches the top of our waiting list, we will use this information to contact you with next steps in the application process. Changes to family composition and income should also be reported.
How do I check the status of my housing application?
You can check the status of your housing application online via the GRHC Applicant Portal. For questions about your status, please contact our waiting list staff through our online Support Center.
Please note that the GRHC does not offer waiting list “position numbers” for any of our housing programs.
I am experiencing homelessness or need immediate housing assistance. How do I apply for emergency housing?
The GRHC administers Hope Community, a rapid re-housing program that serves families experiencing homelessness, however, we are not primarily an emergency housing provider and referrals to Hope Community are through United Way 211. To get information about emergency housing resources, please contact United Way 2‑1‑1.
I currently live outside of the Grand Rapids area. Can I still apply for housing?
Yes, however, please be aware that our agency-owned family and retirement housing developments are required to serve households currently living within the City of Grand Rapids before we serve those applying from outside of our area.
I currently live at a GRHC-owned housing development and my unit is in need of repair. How do I submit a maintenance request?
Current GRHC residents can submit a maintenance request (work order) online using the GRHC Support Center.
